Just cant put this one down....

I am absolutely loving this true story about Jan Struther,author of the much celebrated'Mrs Miniver', but who knew? J Struther was also a talented poet and actually wrote hymns it is fascinating,poignant and a reflection of upper class values at the beginning of the 20th century,this is the synopsis on amazon;

The film "Mrs Miniver", starring Greer Garson, was a wartime classic. It took America by storm and won five Oscars. In Britain, Winston Churchill said that "Mrs Miniver" did more for the Allied cause than a flotilla of battleships. The book that inspired the film had likewise been a bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic and its author, Jan Struther, found it hard to persuade people that she herself was not its heroine. There were indeed many similarities between the lovable subject of Struther's book and the woman herself - both were married with three children, both lived a fashionable, well-off life in a wealthy part of London, and both were unexpectedly affected by the Second World War. Yet while Mrs Miniver was happily married, Jan Struther had drifted out of love with her conventional husband and fallen for an erudite Jewish refugee in flight from Nazi Austria to the United States. The post-war years were to bring a mixture of joy and tragedy. The way in which Jan Struther's life unfolded - from society wife to passionate woman in love with a refugee to wordl-famous author - is a microcosm of what the war could do to people.

An immensely touching story, this biography of the well-loved author is as moving as the film, as witty as the book and as tragic as woman's life at war can be.

Do give it a go,I am loving it!

Miss Pettigrew......

31icxcd29zl__aa115_

Oh Miss Pettigrew! how have we never met before!

You simply must read Miss Pettigrew lives for a day recently published again after a far too long abscence,and soon to be released as a Hollywood movie.

Winifred Watson wrote this charming tale in 1938,and was infact from my home town Newcastle upon Tyne! she never experienced great success in her lifetime,and indeed this was the only published book which received much attention. Miss P is a dowdy middle aged governess who gains a post with a glamorous cabaret singer, Miss LaFosse,the events which follow are both amusing and poignant,soon she is downing cocktails and doing all manner of things she previously frowned upon! This is a lovely Cinderella themed story,I cant wait for the movie to come out!

Oh somebody take me to rehab! I have a serious cookery book addiction!

I bought this today, it is as delightful as Nigella herself,quick but impressive recipes, fabulous photos, I love the TV show as well, I wish I could be that glam in the kitchen, actually I wish I could be that glam anywhere, Nigella looks like an old fashioned movie star, even after putting together a massive culinary feast for a dozen friends, Oh to be a domestic Goddess!

I'm Loving....

41rc1916hbl__aa240_

I am totally loving this biography of Patti Boyd Wonderful Today it has me completely hooked, it takes us through her marriage to Beatle George Harrison, the drugs, drink and rock and roll of the sixties, and her passionate relationship and marriage to Eric Clapton, all peppered with fabulous anecdotes of the pop stars of that time, Patti comes across as a woman simply seeking love, but who as a model in the sixties and the circles she mixed in,went on an extaordinary journey and came out the other side as a survivor, I am about two thirds through it and cannot put it down!

I do love a good book!

Me!
